How Mid-Market Companies Should Choose Finance Consolidation Software

Mid-market groups usually start consolidating in Excel and move when the workbook becomes the riskiest file in the finance team: eliminations done by hand, currency rates pasted in, and one person who understands the formulas. The right tool depends on how many entities you have and how complicated the ownership is.

What mid-market consolidation needs

Groups here typically have 2 to 50 entities, one or two ERPs, a small consolidation team and an external audit.

  • Automated intercompany eliminations and currency translation.
  • A consolidation that fits inside the close calendar, not a separate week after it.
  • An audit trail from consolidated figures down to entity data.
  • Management reporting and budget comparison from the same data.
  • Implementation in weeks to a few months.

How to choose at mid-market scale

  • Count entities and map ownership. With up to about 20 wholly owned entities on one ledger, native GL consolidation may be enough.
  • If you have partial ownership or several GAAPs, check each tool's handling of them specifically.
  • Decide whether you want planning in the same platform.
  • Compare the Excel-native option (Vena) with platform-native ones (Planful, Prophix).

The shortlist, and why each tool is on it

Ordered from the lightest option (consolidating inside your ledger) to dedicated platforms.

1. Sage Intacct

If you already run Sage Intacct, native consolidation handles intercompany eliminations, currency translation and consolidated statements without a separate tool, for roughly 2 to 20 entities. Implementation is typically 2 to 6 weeks as part of an Intacct deployment.

Watch for: Only for companies on Sage Intacct; complex ownership and large entity counts go beyond it. Read the full Sage Intacct profile.

2. Planful

Consolidation with intercompany eliminations, currency translation and minority interest, plus budgeting and reporting in one platform, for roughly 5 to 50 entities. Implementation is typically 2 to 4 months.

Watch for: Less depth than OneStream or Oracle for very complex structures. Read the full Planful profile.

3. Prophix

Consolidation inside a CPM platform with budgeting and reporting, at a lower total cost than enterprise suites. Implementation is typically 2 to 4 months.

Watch for: Currency translation and partial ownership scenarios may need workarounds. Read the full Prophix profile.

4. Vena

Excel-native consolidation that keeps your existing workbooks while adding data collection, elimination rules and audit trails. Implementation is typically 2 to 4 months.

Watch for: A ceiling on complexity for large entity structures or complex ownership. Read the full Vena profile.

5. LucaNet

Consolidation, planning and reporting with automated data quality checks during consolidation and multi-GAAP support. Strong for European and international groups.

Watch for: Less known outside Europe, and implementation needs consolidation expertise. Read the full LucaNet profile.

Runner-up and who should skip what

Runner-up: DataRails or Cube if the real problem is gathering entity data into Excel rather than the consolidation logic. Both keep your spreadsheets and add automation around them.

Usually a poor fit: OneStream for most mid-market groups. Our profile calls it overkill below 10 entities, with enterprise pricing and dedicated admin needs.

Frequently asked questions

When do we need consolidation software instead of Excel?

+

Common triggers are several entities with intercompany trading, foreign currency subsidiaries, audit findings on the consolidation workbook, and a close that stretches because consolidation takes days.

Is Sage Intacct's consolidation enough?

+

For groups on Sage Intacct with roughly 2 to 20 wholly owned entities, often yes. Beyond that, or with complex ownership, a dedicated tool like Planful or Prophix is safer.

Planful, Prophix or Vena?

+

All three combine consolidation with planning at mid-market prices. Planful is sized for about 5 to 50 entities, Prophix has a lower total cost but may need workarounds for partial ownership, and Vena suits teams that want to keep their Excel workbooks.

How long does mid-market consolidation software take to implement?

+

Our profiles put Planful, Prophix and Vena at about 2 to 4 months, and Sage Intacct's native consolidation at 2 to 6 weeks when it's part of an Intacct deployment.
